Abstract

The increasing need for electrical energy must be accompanied with efficient and quality electrical energy. One of the aspects that can reduce the quality of electrical energy is harmonics that appear in electric waves, where the electric wave form of voltage and current is no longer pure sinusoidal. Nonlinear load that causes harmonics comes from equipment used in electric power systems such as converters, adjustable speed drives, and various equipment based on the switching process. Therefore it is necessary to conduct research on the effect of harmonics towards the performance of the transformer as one of the fundamental tools in the electric power system. The performance transformer can be determined through the parameters of power losses that occur in the transformer when the transformer works properly. In this study, measurements and calculations were carried out on the secondary side of the distribution transformer for one week to obtain a maximum current of 93.1 A, maximum harmonic voltage of 2%, maximum harmonic current of 17.7%, and maximum power loss due to harmonic effect of 2.734 kW. The results of the study show that harmonic distortion helps produce power losses in the distribution transformer. Keywords: Power losses, Distribution Transformers, Harmonics.
