Abstract
Abstract Background : Periodontal disease is one of the most widespread infectious diseases in humans. This disease, that lead to the destruction of periodontal tissues, including periodontal ligament (PDL), cementum, and bone, is a major cause of tooth loss in adults and is associated with a number of systemic diseases. Regeneration of periodontal tissues is a key objective of periodontal treatment. Stem cells are a promising tool for tissue regeneration, since those cells have capacity for self-renewal and differentiated into many different cell types. One source of stem cells that can be used in periodontal regeneration is stem cell that derived from PDL. Aims : The purpose of this study is to give a short overview of the potential uses of PDL stem cells for periodontal regeneration. Content : PDL is a specialized connective tissue that connects cementum and alveolar bone to maintain and support teeth in situ and preserve tissue homoeostasis. PDL contains a population of multipotent postnatal stem cells that can be isolated from the root surface of extracted teeth or from wisdom tooth, which are commonly extracted during adolescence, providing a unique reservoir of stem cells from an accessible tissue resource. PDL stem cells can be expanded in vitro and induced to differentiate into fibroblast, cementoblast, and osteoblast under particular culture condition. These cells show high alkaline phosphatase activity and produce mineralized nodules and bone matrix proteins, which it means that these cells could possibly be used to induce bone regeneration. PDL stem cells also have ability to form cementum and PDL-like structures, indicating that these cells have potential for use in periodontal tissue regeneration. Another benefit of these cells is their low immunogenicity and immunosuppressive function, which make them as a better choice for regenerative therapy. Conclusion : PDL stem cells might hold promise as a therapeutic approach for reconstruction of tissues destroyed by periodontal diseases. Key words : PDL stem cells, periodontal diseases, bone regeneration, periodontal regeneration
