Abstract

Utilization of coal as a source of national energy should be made considering the rapid current national energy consumption that can not be met by domestic production of petroleum. Utilization is expected not only in the form of raw materials but the coal has increased value added. Increased added value or quality of coal is also in line with the Masterplan Economic Development Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia 2011-2025 which has 3 (three) missions are a major focus of one of them is in adding value and expanding the value chain of production processes and distribution of asset management and access ( potential) Resources, geografs region, and human resources, through the creation of economic activities that are integrated and synergistic in and inter-regional centers of economic growth. Coal utilization technology tends to produce one product only to power plants, liquefied coal, city gas (methane), or briquettes. But with the technology to be developed is expected to use coal of various qualities can be used for various purposes. Such as to produce charcoal to briquettes, hot steam for power generation, liquid smoke to synthetic fuels, and methane gas for city gas. The technology will be developed is a theoretical idea to review the various references from pyrolysis, power plants, as well as liquefaction coal. Coal utilization technology consists of three systems is a combination of three processes namely the utilization of coal combustion process directly, evaporation (steam) and pyrolysis. Coal combustion systems used for high calorie content such as bituminous to anthracite, the system is used as fuel for steam and pyrolysis systems. Pyrolysis system used for low-grade coal such as bituminous coal and lignite will produce charcoal to briquettes, methane gas for city gas, and liquid smoke and tar to synthetic fuel. While the steam system is used to generate steam that is used to turn turbines and generate electrical currents.
