Abstract

Surveys were done in lowland and highland areas of South Sumatera from September 2009 to April 2010. This study aimed to inventory and to identify species of L. erysimi host plants at the central vegetables in South Sumatra, to monitor its population development and to observe the symptoms and damage by L. erysimi on mustard. The surveys were conducted at various places 10-1,430 m above sea level in South Sumatra. The survey included wild plants and crops attacked by L. erysimi. L. erysimi and its hosts were observed visually and directly on the host plants colonized and attacked by L. erysimi. Species of L. erysimi host plants found were 12 species, namely Brassica juncea, Brassica campestris pekinensis, Brasicca campestris napus, Brassica oleracea, Brassica pharachinensis, Brassica rapa pekinensis, Apium graveolens, Nasturtium indicum, Cardamine hirsuta, Cloeme rutidospermae, Sunchus arventris, and Monochoria vaginalis. L. erysimi population found at two weeks after planting was 3.25 nymphs/plant. The peak population reached 547.08 nymphs/plant on 5 week-old mustard. Mustard damage by L. erysimi occured on 5 week-old mustard and reached 32.94%. Damage symptoms on mustard by L. erysimi could cause yellow curly-leaves, and severe damage could make the mustard stunted. Thus, L. erysimi was a harmful exotic pest, especially for mustard.
