Abstract
Surveys were conducted from January until May 2003. The objectives of the study were to record host plant species of leaf miner, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard), and to detect leafminer damage and population on cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.). Leafminerinfested leaves were collected from various plants in highland areas of South Sumatera for determining the leafminer host plant species. Leafminer damage recorded on cabbage leaves, and the leaves were sampled weekly to observe its damage. The population was also monitored weekly using yellow sticky traps. L. huidobrensis was a highly polyphagous insect that could infest a large number of vegetable crops and weeds. From the survey, we found 66 host plants could be infested by the leafminer. The hosts consisted 41 species of crops and 25 species of weeds. The population was 7-26 flies per 6 sticky traps. Foliage damage caused by leaf miner activity of L. huidobrensis larvae caused linear, irregular (serpentine), whitish or greenish mines. Level of foliage damage caused by the leafminer ranged 1.61-5.47%. The damage by the leafminer was low. However, its high population was potential to attack other crops, such as potato, tomato, and beans.
