Abstract

The objectives of the research were to determine parasitism by egg parasitoid, Trichogrammatoidea and to analyze the effect of the parasitism on maintaining the population and damage by Diamondback Moth (DBM), P. xylostella. The method used in the research was direct observation. The egg traps were used to ensure parasitism on the natural eggs of P. xylostella. Research was conducted from July 2003 until March 2004 in Pagaralam. The highest level of parasitization by Trichogrammatoidea sp. at Muarasiban on natural eggs was 24.93% and on egg traps was 10.32%, while at Kerinjing it was 61.3% and on egg traps it was 45.34%. The highest larvae population at Muarasiban was 0.348 (larvae per crop) with 0.126 (larvae per crop) in average and at Kerinjing it was 0.086 (larvae per crop) with 0.046 (larvae per crop) in average. The damage by P. xylostella in Muarasiban was 26.157% in average and in Kerinjing it was 4.566%. The rate of parasitization by egg parasitoids tended to follow the development of DBM egg population. Thus, they were density dependent parasitoids. The rates of the parasitization affected the damage by DBM larvae on mustard leaves. The leaf damage by DBM larvae decreased with increasing parasitization by the egg parasitoid. The heaviest infestation occurred when the parasitization was the lowest.
