Abstract
Laboratory experiments of Plutella xylostella were carried out to determine development of immature and mature P. xylostella on five host plants, and to determine ovipositing and feeding preference of P. xylostella on the host plant species. P. xylostella were tested on five host plants, i.e. mustard (Brassica alba), rape (B. campestris oleifera), Indian mustard (B. juncea), sawi lemah (Nasturtium indicum), and kardamin (Cardamine hirsuta). There were no significant differences in larval and pupal survival on the host plants, as well as in egg and pupal development. However, larval development on B. alba was significantly shorter than on the other plants. Preference assay indicated that females preferred to oviposit on B. juncea. Although, in the no-choice experiment there was no significant difference in female ovipositing preference on the Brassicaceous species. Feeding preference showed no significantly difference in the third instar larvae on any of the Brassicaceous species. Pupae reared on B. juncea resulted in higher weight gain than those on the other species, but no significant difference between B. juncea or B. c. oleifera on the weight gain of the pupae. Our study indicated that B. juncea and B. c. oleifera are more preferable as host plants for P. xylostella than other Brassicaceaeous species.
