Abstract
Background: Dementia is a usually chronic and progressive syndrome caused by organic damage on brain. Long term benzodiazepine usage on dementia patients have been controversial given the many negative side effects of using benzodiazepines in dementia patients, the lack of basic data regarding the use of benzodiazepines in dementia patients especially in the city of Palembang, this study needs to be done. Method: This research is a descriptive study using secondary data in the form of medical records taken from Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. The analysis was carried out descriptively from each data variable collected. then arranged and grouped and processed using the Microsoft Excel program. Results: The results of the study in the form of respondent data using benzodiazepines were 29 respondents consisting of 16 (55.2%) men and 13 (44.8%) women with a minimum age of 28 years and a maximum age of 88 years, the average age was 62 years old. A total of 9 (31.1%) respondents used diazepam drugs with frequency of administration 1-2 times a day. Only 1 (3.4%) of the respondents used alprazolam with the frequency of administration once a day. There are 7 types of merlopam drugs (24.1%) of respondents who use the frequency of administration 1-2 times a day. In addition there were 3 (10.3%) respondents who used a combination of two types of benzodiazepine drugs, namely 2 mg diazepam combined with 10 mg clobazam, 2 mg merlopam and 10 mg clobazam, and 2 mg diazepam and 2 mg merlopam. Conclusion: The administration of the dose and frequency of the drug benzodiazepines in dementia patients at RSUP Muhammad Hoesin Palembang in the 2014-2018 period was in harmony with other studies. While the duration of administration is relatively different, it is found that long-term use of benzodiazepines. Keywords: Dementia, Benzodiazepine
