Abstract

Background: Scabies is an endemic skin disease caused by infestation and sensitization by mites Sarcoptes scabiei varieties hominis and their products which are characterized by itching in skin folds especially at night. In Indonesia, scabies ranked 3rd of the 12 most common skin diseases, although there has been a decline in the incidence of scabies from year to year. The purpose of this study was to know the association between of dormitory student room sanitation with scabies incidence at Pondok Pesantren Subulussalam, Palembang. Methods: This was an analytic observational – cross-sectional research that was conducted during September, 2019. Sampling were conducted as multiple random sampling. Samples size of this research were 86 students. Data were collected with Interview, clinical diagnosis of scabies was done by, at least 2 from 4 cardinal signs and/or microscopic S. scabiei examination from skin scraping test, and subjective environmental observation. Data were analyzed using chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Result: Scabies infection incidence At Subulussalam Boarding School was 45,3% (39 students), diagnosed from cardinal signs. Statistic test shows probability score for correlation of humidity, temperature, natural lighting, ventilation, and occupancy density with scabies incidence p = 0,014, p = 0,001, p = 0,011, p = 0,004, and p = 0,001 respectively. The results of multivariate analysis using the LR backward method show that air humidity and occupant density have a major influence with the occurrence of scabies infection At Subulussalam Boarding School in Palembang 2019. Conclusion: There were correlation of humidity, temperature, natural lighting, occupancy density and ventilation with prevalence of scabies.
