Abstract

Correlation of body mass index and ankle joint instability in students of Sriwijaya University Faculty of Medicine. High BMI is a cause of injury due to weight bearing, one of which is ankle joint instability. Joint instability is decreased joint ability to prevent dislocation. Previous research only examined the ankle joint isntability in certain groups such as athletes. This study was conducted to see the correlation between BMI and ankle joint instability in the non-athlete group of young adults. This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. IMT and joint stability measurements were performed using a single leg stance test on all students of the medical student of Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University year 2016 who met the inclusion criteria and did not meet the exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, the Spearman correlation test between the single leg stance test and body mass index and multiple linear regression tests.Measurements of body mass index and single leg stance test was successfully performed on 59 male subjects and 166 female subjects. Spearman correlation test results between body mass index with eyes open single leg stance test showed significant result (p <0.05) with r -0.497. Spearman correlation test results between body mass index with eyes closed single leg stance were showed significant result (p <0.05) with r -0.440. There is a significant correlation between body mass index and ankle joint instability.
