Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by loss of articular cartilage that causes pain, stiffness, and movement disorders. Obesity is one of the risk factors that cause knee OA. Several studies have shown that BMI and pain intensity are related to the severity of knee OA. However, this statement still causes a lot of controversy over the relationship of BMI and pain intensity with degree of severity in knee OA. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of BMI and pain intensity with degree of severity in knee OA. Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross sectional study design based on primary data by interviewing patients and secondary data from knee x-ray results of patients seeking treatment at Su'adah Clinic. The study sample was knee OA patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: From 35 samples, 88.6% of knee OA patients were women aged 61-70 years (48,6%) with occupations as housewives 65,7%. BMI >25 was 51,4%, severe pain intensity was 48,6%, and 48,6% had severe severity or stage IV. The results of the analysis using the Spearman correlation test showed that there was no relationship between BMI and degree of severity in knee osteoarthritis (r= 0,324, p= 0,058). However, there was a significant relationship between pain intensity and degree of severity in knee osteoarthritis with strong positive correlation (r= 0,709, p= 0,000). Conclusion: There is no relationship between BMI with degree of severity in knee osteoarthritis. However, there is a strong relationship between pain intensity and degree of severity in knee osteoarthritis.
