Abstract

Background : Primary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain in the lower abdomen without any gynecological abnormalities. More than 60% of young women aged 17 – 24 experience dysmenorrhea which can be caused by various factors such as lifestyle, reproductive factors, and also psychosocial factors. Students with all their activities often feel tired and experience psychological stress. Psychosocial factors such as suffering from depression and experiencing violence also affect the incidence of dysmenorrhea. Stress itself is one of the factors associated with dysmenorrhea. Students with all their activities often feel tired and experience psychological stress that can be related to dysmenorrhea. Objective : This study aims to determine the correlation of stress with primary dysmenorrhea in female medical students at the Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University. Method : This study was an observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The statistical analysis used was the Spearman correlation test with 100 respondents. Results : The results of the correlation analysis of stress levels and the incidence of dysmenorrhea showed a relationship with the results obtained p = 0.045 (p <0.05) and r = 0.201. Conclusion : Stress has a significant correlation with primary dysmenorrhea. Keywords : mental health, menstrual pain, college students.
