Abstract

Background: Dementia is a chronic progressive syndrome in which cognitive impairment is the cardinal symptom along with impairment in memory, thinking ability, orientation, language, comprehension, calculation, and judgement. Other than those symptoms, Dementia is oftentime accompanied by behavioral and psychological symptoms as well. Hence the antipsychotic use for these patients. This study wished to identify the use of antipsychotic in Dementia patients in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang year 2014- 2018. Method: This was a descriptive study with cross sectional approach using secondary data. Samples were dementia patients who were given antipsychotics. Only dementia patients without no underlying condition other than dementia that caused the symptoms were included in this study through total sampling method. Data were obtained from their medical records. Results: Twenty-nine dementia patients were treated with antipsychotic (38.67%). Most of the patients were females (55.17%) and they were between 56-65 years old (27.59%). The most commonly used antipsychotic was Haloperidol (60%), followed by Risperidone (34.28%). Haloperidol 0.5 mg (34.48%) given twice a day (58.62%) was the most common regimen identified followed by Risperidone 1 mg twice a day (34.48%). In average, haloperidol and Risperidone were given for 425 and 295.5 days-long respectively. Conclusion: Despite the prevalence of behavioural and psychological symptoms theoretically, not all dementia patients in RSUP Dr Mohammad Hoesin were treated with antipsychotic.
