Abstract

Lepra is an infectious disease which often neglected and caused complications such as deformity. Indonesian’s Ministry of Health and WHO already made strategies to decrease the number of leprosy and to increase leprosy patients life quality, even so, the goal of thus policy can only be reached if the general practitioner has good knowledge of the disease. the aims of this study is to identify awareness of medical students at Sriwijaya University Faculty of Medicine about leprosy. This study is driven by a cross-sectional study with a descriptive approach. The population of this study includes all Clinical Medical students at Sriwijaya University that already passed the dermatology and venerology station with the minimum sample is 65 respondents. To asses student’s knowledge, we used questionnaire that consist of 15 questions which includes question about clinical manifestations, treatment, diagnostic modality, complication and preventions of leprosy. The questionnaire was filled by 76 students. The results showed that 56,5% of respondent has excellent knowledge, 32,9% has good knowledge, 9,2% has average knowledge, 1,3% others has poor knowledge of leprosy and the statistical mean showed that students have good knowledge. Based on the result, it can be concluded that medical students have good understanding of leprosy although there are still many who were not aware of clinical symptoms dan side effects of using MDT.
