Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is one of the predisposing factors of type II diabetes mellitus. The glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) can evaluate blood sugar as it reflects the average blood glucose levels in the last 6-12 weeks and has been recommended to be a diagnostic tool to identify diabetes. Aim: Knowing the difference of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) between obese and non-obese teenagers aged 15-19 years old. Methods: The study uses observational analytical methods with cross sectional research designs. The study was conducted in October-November 2019. A number of 50 samples consisted of adolescent groups of obese and non-obese teenage groups that were acquired using large formula unpaired numerical samples. Sampling technique using quota sampling techniques and consecutive sampling techniques. Nutritional status data is obtained by measuring the body mass index by age and gender. The HbA1c level check is done on all samples in each group. The data was analyzed univariate and bivariate using independent T test with the Mann Whitney alternative test. Result: The results of the study with the Mann Whitney alternative test showed p = 0,000 (p<0.05) with mean HbA1c levels in obese teenage is 6,1% and the mean HbA1c levels in non-obese teenage is 4,7%. Conclusion: HbA1c levels in adolescents aged 15-19 years who are obese are higher than those who are not obese. Keywords: HbA1c levels in teenager, obese teenagers, non-obese teenagers.
