Abstract

Introduction: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that causes destruction in large joints and accompanied by structural changes in cartilage, tendon, ligaments, and inflammation of the synovial membrane which vary in degree. According to WHO, osteoarthritis is the second leading cause of disability in the elderly after stroke. This study aims to determine the associaton of characteristics and disability in osteoarthritis patients in the Rheumatology-Internal Medicine Polyclinic Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method: Research was done by an observational analitic study with cross sectional design. Subject in this research was osteoarthritis patients in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Samples were obtained by consecutive sampling technique by conducting interviews using a questionnaire and the WOMAC Index instrument. Result: From the 90 study subjects, it was found that most had mild disabilities (56.7%), while the least severe disabilities were experienced by osteoarthritis patients (7.8%). In addition, the majority of osteoarthritis patients who come for treatment above 50 years old (97.8%), are obese (44.4%), secondary education (42.2%), unemployed (82,2%), no history of injury (78.9%), duration of illness experienced within 1-5 years (52.2%), and length of treatment within 1-5 years (46.7%). Limitations of physical activity of participants in this study were influenced by duration of illness (p = 0.032) and duration of treatment (p = 0.039). Meanwhile, age (p = 1,000), BMI (p = 0.066), educational level (p = 0.109), occupation (p = 0.358), and history of injury (p = 0.201) did not show a significant relationship with disability. Conclusion: A significant relationship was found between disability and duration of illness, and duration of treatment. Meanwhile, between disability and age, BMI, educational , occupation or injury history, no significant relationship was found.
