Abstract

Endophytic fungi are a rich source of novel organic compounds with interesting biological activities and a high level of biodiversity. An unidentified Ascomycete, isolated from petiole of brotowali (Tinaspora crispa), was examined antibacterial activity by disc diffusion methode against Gram positive bacterial strains of Bacillus subtillis and Gram negative bacterial strains of Escherichia coli. The maximum zone of inhibition was obtained with ethyl acetate extract against E. coli followed against B. subtillis. Column chromatographed fractions of the ethyl acetate extract were also found to have antimicrobial activity. The proposed chemical structure of active metabolite in fraction is phenolate compound which was determined through the UV and IR analysis
