Abstract

Coffee generally grows in the highlands but the there are several reasearch that explain coffee can grow in the lowlands. This study aims at assesment whether the characteristics of the lowlands in Banyuasin Regency suitable or not for robusta coffee plants, especially from some of the soil's physical and chemical properties. This research was conducted in Pangkalan Benteng Village, Talang Kelapa District, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. This research was conducted in October 2018 until April 2019. In this study, survey method was used at the intensive level with direct observation in the field using a 1: 3000 scale map with a study area of 6.5 hectares, determining the location of sampling with grid method where one sample point represents an area of 0.65 hectares, so the number of samples are 10 samples in one field. The parameters observed in the field are effective depth and soil drainage. And the parameters observed in the laboratory were soil physical properties (soil texture) and soil chemistry (pH, total N, P2O5, K2O, CEC and C-organic). Data that has been obtained from the field and laboratory will be processed based on the physical and chemical properties of the soil that will be presented in the table and descriptive and see the land suitability class based on the criteria of physical and soil chemical properties that refer to CSR/FAO (1983). The results showed that the lowlands of Pangkalan Benteng Village can be developed for Robusta coffee plants by overcoming the limiting factors, namely CEC, temperature, dry month, and sandy soil texture.
