Abstract

Introduction: Agarwood leaf (Aquilaria malaccensis) contains flavonoids and tannins which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity against the gastric ulcer. This study aims to determine the effect of agarwood leaves extract on the number of ulcer score, severity of ulcer score and gastric fluid pH in ethanol-induced white rats. Method: The study was an in vivo experimental with post-test only control group design. Wistar strain white rats (n=30) were divided into six groups with each group consisting of five rats with group I: normal, group II: negative control, group III: positive control, group IV: EDG 90 mg/kgBW, group V: EDG 180 mg/kgBW and group VI: EDG 360 mg/kgBW. Rats were induced with giving ethanol 80% intragastrically after eight days of treatment. One hour after induction, rats were sacrificed and their stomach taken to check the number of ulcer score, severity of ulcer score and gastric fluid pH. Result: The umber of ulcer score, the severity of ulcer score and the gastric fluid pH were obtained in group I (1,40±0,55; 1,40±0,55; 3,40±0,55), group II (2,20±0,45; 2,00±0,00; 1,60±0,55), group III (2,00±0,00; 2,00±0,00; 5,00±0,70), group IV (2,40±0,55; 2,40±0,55; 4,20±1,30), group V (2,20±0,84; 1,80±0,45; 4,20±1,09) dan group VI (1,50±0,35; 1,50±0,35; 4,60±0,89). Conclusion: The agarwood leaf extract group dose 360 mg/kgBB has the number of ulcer score and the severity of ulcer score is smaller and the gastric fluid pH is higher than the negative control group. Keyword: Agarwood leaves extract, number of ulcer, severity of ulcer, gastric fluid pH, gastric ulcer.
