Abstract

Background: Overweight/obesity can affect oral hygiene. Overweight/obesity individuals have lower oral hygiene than normal-weight individuals. Overweight/obesity individuals have high frequency of eating. Overweight/obesity individuals also have low salivary flow rate which can cause bad oral selfcleansing. These condition can cause debris accumulation then becomes a source energy for bacteria metabolism therefore it stimulated the forming of plaques and calculus. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of overweight/obesity on OHI scores in students of the Medical Faculty Sriwijaya University. Method: A total of 80 students of Medical Faculty Sriwijaya University, aged 18-25 years, were included in the study. Subjects consisted of group I (normal BMI) and group II (overweight/obesity BMI). The Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) was used to assess the oral hygiene status of study group. OHI scores of group I were compared with group II. Result: Data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05). The mean OHI scores of the overweight/obesity BMI group was higher (2.84) than the normal BMI group (1.67). There was a significant difference in the OHI scores between normal BMI individuals and overweight/obesity BMI individuals with a significance value of 0,000 (p<0.05). Conclusion: The oral hygiene of overweight/obesity individuals was worse than normal-weight individuals. Keywords: oral hygiene, overweight/obese, OHI scores.
