Abstract

The area of mixed rubber farm was about 2 ha and this farm was laid on varied slopes i.e. (2, 6, 9,12 and 16)%. Gully erosion was occured on this land between the slope of 12% and 16% and sediment from gully erosion was stopped by four bamboo trees at the border of the farm. The aims of this investigation were to find out the amount of bamboo shoot per tree, the distance between bamboo trees, the area and the depth of sediment trapped, the amount and some properties of sediment. The investigation was done by measuring the surface area of sediment trapped and measuring the depth of soil horizon. Soil samples were taken from 3 sites and from four soil layers. The depth of soil layers were (0-25; 25-56; 56-80 and 80-115) cm, soil textures were dominated by clay loam excepted at the layer of (56-80) cm which was red iron oxide rocks (gravel size). Organic matter contents were varied but it was higher on soil surface layer (6,4%) than other layers (about 4%). Based on organic matter content, soil colour and texture, it was supposed that the former soil surface was at the depth of 80 cm, then it was burried by sediment due to bamboo trees. The dimension of gully behind bamboo trees was 92 cm depth and 540 cm and the distance between bamboo trees were varied from 1 m to 3,4 m. The total amount of sediment trapped was about 32,32 tones. Thus, four bamboo trees had the ability to overcome gully erosion, by trapping the sediment. This ability was caused by running bamboos spread out forming a dense, underground network of rhizomes and roots making a very effective barrier to erosion. In order to overcome gully erosion on slopes less than 12%, it is suggested to grow bamboo trees. However it needs more investigation about its effect on other soil properties and slope degrees.
