Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive research aimed to investigate types and causes of students’ errors in solving non-routine algebra problem based on Newman procedure. The subject of this researsh was six students of X class of SMA Srijaya Negara Palembang. The data of this study were collected by test and interview. The result of this study shows that in solving non routine algebra questions, the dominant errors which students did were process skills error and encoding error. The causes of process skill error were inaccuracy, memorising procedures without understanding, misconception an algebra concept. Whilst the cause of encoding error was student made a mistake in the previous stage. An error that many students did was transformation error. The causes of transformation error were not understanding the definition of variable, translating the information into mathematical model without reasoning analysis, and inconsistent with previously planned strategy. The errors which student rarely did were reading and comprehention error. The cause of the reading error was unable to know about a mathematics symbol. The cause of comprehention error was students did not read the question carefully and were unable to interpret the meaning of the sentence.
