Abstract
Sleep disturbance is a symptoms that are characterized by a disturbance in the amount, quality, or sleep time of a person. Some theories state that habits that are applied such as watching television or using other electronic media are thought to be one of the causes of sleep disorders in children. This study aims to determine the association of electronic media use with sleep disturbances in preschoolers. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach, conducted on kindergartens (TK) in Ilir Barat I District, Palembang, which was obtained by simple random sampling took place in August. Data on media use was carried out by filling out questionnaires and sleep disorders using SDSC. Of the 120 subjects, the most age was 5-6 years (63.8%). More girls than boys. All children have used media, the majority is smartphones/tablets (62.5%). There were 33.3% of the onset of media use less than 2 years, duration> 2 hours (42.5%) and the contents of the program were not for children (5%). The prevalence of sleep disturbances in preschoolers was 41,67%. There was a significant association between media types (p = 0.023, PR= 2.531), onset (p = 0.032, PR = 2.500) and duration (p = 0.010, PR= 2.679) with sleep disturbances. The contents of media were not associated with sleep disturbances. There was significant relationship between type , onset, duration with sleep disturbances but there was no significant relationship between content with sleep disturbances in preschoolers.
