Abstract

The research aimed to analyze potential lands for oil palm plantation development in tidal swampy area. The research was carried out in tidal area in Pulau Rimau Banyuasin District South Sumatra from January to April 2011. The research method was intensive field survey using Citra landsat interpretation. The research resumed that soils found in tidal swampy area are mineral soils and peats. Pyrite potency and supporting factors of soil acidity can be studied intensively from vegetation analyses and its sulfur donator of vegetation to the soils. In order to determine the best potential lands for oil palm plantation, soil classification was carried out by using approaches of Soil Taxonomy, Land typology and Tide Type. The best potential lands for oil palm plantation development are Actual Acid Sulphate Soils, Potential Acid Sulphate Soils with tide types of B, C and D as well as peat soils, however tide type of A is not recommended. The potential total areal of land is around 14,073 ha or 84.27% of the whole research area.
