Abstract

Introduction. Sleep is one of a basic needs for human being, which significant for health. Sleep activity takes one third of human life. A good sleep quality can optimize the quality of health whereas poor sleep quality can cause in reduced function in daytime activities. This study aims to identify the pattern of sleep in medical students. Methods. This research was an observational descriptive study with cross sectional design. The subject of the study was medical students in Sriwijaya University between class of 2016 and 2019 that met the inclusion criteria. The Assessment of sleep pattern in students was then observed using PSQI questionnaire (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). Result. From 400 subjects of the study, it was found that most students have a poor sleep quality (69,0%), sleep latency < 15 minutes (68%), sleep duration at 5-6 hours (57,5%), sleep efficiency > 85% (82,3%), sleep disturbance score 1 (82,5%), never use sleep medication (98,5%), and daytime dysfunction score 1 (38,8%). Conclusion. Sleep patterns of medical students at Sriwijaya University shown to be dominated by poor sleep quality. Consequently, it has to be their concern to improve their sleep quality in order to prevent various diseases complication, increase individual health, and maximize focus and concentration. Keywords.
