Abstract

Background: Hypoglycemia is one of the complications that occur in elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Hypoglycemia can cause activity disturbances to the degree of moderate hypoglycemia and severe hypoglycemia causes total disruption in patient activity. Research on the degree of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 DM in the elderly, especially in the city of Palembang, this study needs to be done. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the degree of hypoglycemia with the daily activities of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 diabetes mellitus elderly. Method: This research was an observational analytic study by interviewing elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Bhayangkara Hospital Palembang. Data analysis according to inclusion criteria (patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 60-90 years and patients who have experienced hypoglycemia) and exclusion (patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus elderly who have never experienced hypoglycemia and patients with disabilities, for example: stroke and disability) use SPSS 2.0 program. Results: activity as The amount of data that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was 53 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had hypoglycemia. In this study found the age group 60-74 years with mild hypoglycemia. While the smallest distribution is the age group 75-90 with moderate hypoglycemia. The research also found that the biggest frequency of mild hypoglycemia complications was male gender and the frequency of moderate hypoglycemia complications was female. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus elderly who experienced mild hypoglycemia with undisturbed activity were 14 (26.4%) patients, 27 (50.9%) patients experienced mild disturbed activity and 1 (1.9%) patient experienced moderate disturbed activity, whereas in patients who experienced moderate hypoglycemia who experienced mild disturbed many as 6 (11.3%) and 5 (9.4%) patients experienced moderate disturbed activity. Conclusion: Complications of hypoglycemia in elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus patients affect the patient's activity according to the degree of hypoglycemia experienced by the patient. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus elderly who experience mild hypoglycemia and patients who have moderate hypoglycemia experience mild activity disruption. The frequency of patients experiencing mild hypoglycemia complications is more in males while the frequency of moderate hypoglycemia complications often occurs in the female sex.
