Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of the Schiff bases of vanillin and aniline has been carried out with Cd2+ metal ions. The characterization of the Schiff bases was carried out using a UV-Vis and FT-IR spectrophotometer. The interaction between Schiff bases with Cd2+ metal ions was studied through the interference effect of Cu2+ and Zn2+ metal ions on the formation of Schiff base complexes with Cd2+ metal. The success of Schiff base synthesis from vanillin and aniline is proven by the results of monitoring of Schiff bases on the TLC plate which shows the formation of Schiff base compounds with yellow stains and has an Rf value of 0.5. Monitoring is carried out using an eluent in the form of a mixture of n-hexane and ethyl acetate in a ratio (4: 1). The emergence of maximum absorption at 330 nm wavelength is an electronic transition from π to π * on the UV-Vis spectrophotometer. In addition, based on the FT-IR spectrum, absorption occurs at the wave number 1583.56 cm-1 which indicates the presence of an azometin group. The Schiff base has the highest absorption at pH 6 where the double bond (C = N) is more stable. The interaction between the Schiff base and the metal results in a spectrum that experiences a bigger wavelength shift. Keywords: vanillin, aniline, Schiff base, metal ion interactions, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR, Cd2+ Bibliography: 47 (1982-2018) Telah dilakukan sintesis dan karakterisasi basa Schiff dari vanilin dan anilin.
