Abstract

Leaf yellow and leaf curl diseases of chili are categorized as very destructing disease during the past five years especially to chili farmers. The disease are transmitted by white fly (Bemisia tabaci) and aphid (Aphis gossypii). However, there were few reports telling that the diseases were also transmitted by seed. This research was aimed at knowing the role of seed in transmitting viral diseases of chili and its transmission efficiency. In this research, an experiment was conducted using three different origins of chili seeds, namely seed originated from healthy plant, seeds originated from chili infected by leaf yellow disease and seeds originated from chili infected by leaf curl virus. Leaf yellow symptoms were appears on plant originated from healthy seeds and on those from seeds harvested from plants infected by leaf yellow virus, while leaf curl symptom appeared on chili plant originated from chili infected by leaf curl virus, even though the symptom very similar to that of yellow disease. Disease appeared on chili originated from chili infected by leaf curl virus was similar to yellow disease, because in the field the two viruses are frequently in association. The incidence of yellow disease appeared on chili originated from healthy seeds was 20%. This could be caused by the plant from where the seeds were harvested was infected by virus, but had no symptoms so it looked healthy but actually infected by virus, and when germinated to plant, the virus infected the new plant. The incidence of yellow diseases on chili plants originated from seeds harvested from plant infected by yellow virus was 16%. It was revealed that leaf yellow virus could more easily be transmitted by seed compared to those harvested from plants infected by leaf curl virus. Keyword : chili, leaf yellow disease, leaf curl disease, seed transmission
