Abstract

Backgrounds: Anasthesia and surgery are stressors that can cause stress responses. Hormones such as cortisol and orther glucocorticoids can stimulate gluconeogenesis in hepar up to 6-10 times when stressed. Increased gluconeogenesis due to increased secretion of cortisol and other glucocorticoids causes hyperglycemia. This study aims to determine the comparison of blood sugar levels before and after surgery with general anesthesia in elective surgery at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Central Public Hospital. Methods: This research is an observational analytic study with a cohort design approach. The number of samples taken was 29 patients who underwent elective surgery under general anesthesia at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in January 2020. Result:Statistical analysis was performed with the Shapiro-Wilktest to determine the normality of sample distribution, and the Wilcoxon test to compare blood sugar levels before and after surgery found that there were significant changes in blood sugar levels before and after surgery using general anesthesia. Conclusion: Blood sugar levels after surgery experienced significant changes p=0,000 (p<0.05) of blood sugar levels before surgery with general anesthesia and changes in blood sugar levels before and after surgery are not related to age, sex, ASA status, and duration of operation.
