Abstract
Research on application of green basil (Ocimum basilicum Linn.) and purple basil (O. sanctum Linn.) leaf extracts as attractant of fruit flies was done from April until September 2008. Both extracts contain methyl eugenol (54-64 %) therefore they can be used as atracttans of male fruit flies. The experiments were located in chili plantation in low land and high land area in South Sumatera. The use of attractant was aimed to observe species of fruit flies, amount of fruit flies trapped and effective time to trap fruit flies.Trapping method was applicated by using modification of type Steiner 2 in chilli plantation. The experiment results showed 4 species were trapped in lowland i.e. Bactrocera. dorsalis, B. carambola, B. papayae and B. umbrosus, while in high land fruit, flies trepped were B. dorsalis, B. carambola, dan B. umbrosus. The most amount of fruit flies trapped was B.dorsalis. Effective time of trap of green basil was 24-28,6 days, and purple basil extracts was 25-29 days.
