Abstract

Induction motor is a type of electrical motor which use alternating current to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy, 3 phase inductuon motor is the most common type of electrical motor for industry because of its characteristic which are cheap, simple and durable. 3 phase induction motor has a high starting current that can cause disturbance in the system if the starting current exceed the power capacity. PT. Pertamina RU III Plaju-Sungai Gerong utilized induction motor with high rated power up to 1250kW in large number, thus requires a large power supply. In order to optimize the power used on the existing MCC, the writer conducted a research using a software application ETAP to find out the effect of using a different starting method for motor 2210-JCM on MCC 34. The result of the test are follows: the current produced by motor 2210-JCM by using auto-transformer starting method is 4 times the nominal current of the motor or 459A which compared to the current produced by DOL Starting method which is 697A is a lot smaller, while the soft start starting method produced the current of 381A which is 3 times the nominal current of the motor which is exactly the limit set in the setting. Meanwhile the voltage drop caused by the starting of the motor using the auto-transformer and soft start methods are 12-14% drop and 8% drop respectively, compared to the voltage drop caused by using DOL starting method, the results shows inprovement in reducing the inrush current and the voltage drop by using above methods.
