Abstract

In machining process, it is very important to define the right tool as it affects the product quality, tools that have been used continuously will produce low-quality products, and will cause tool wear and shorten its lifetime. Therefore, coolant is needed to reduce tool wear caused by friction. Tools with additional coolant have longer lifetime and less tool wear compared to those without coolant. Predicting variable distribution of cutting simulation and apply it in Finite Element Method code tool wear model, adjusted by the variable process, tool wear level distribution along the tool surface can be predicted effectively. Geometry predicted from tool wear can be calculated by wear level data compared to measured geometry. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to analyze tool wear in block end-milling process using FEM based software. Software used in this research is DEFORM-3D to simulate the tool wear in cutting process between tool and work piece which geometry has been determined. In this research, the tool material is wolfram carbide and work piece material is titanium alloy. The result shown that initial temperature is 20ºC and rise to 31.945ºC at the end of the machining process, the tool wear is dominant on the flank wear. Wear value obtained is far from the value expected where the coefficient value on temperature obtained is far below the expected value.
