Abstract

PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is the second largest thermal coal producer in the world located in North Sangatta sub-district, East Kutai district, East Kalimantan. In coal mining activities using an surface mining system, it has the potential to cause environmental damage, one of the environmental damages is the emergence of acid mine drainage (AMD) from certain sulphide minerals that are in rocks with conditions where there is water and oxygen. Acid mine drainage which caused by surface mining activity at Pinang South Pit was flowed to Azalea Pond. It has a pH (degree of acidity) of 2 (two) to 4 (four) which is not comply with the Environmental Quality Standard of 6 (six) to 9 (nine). Acid mine water in PT Kaltim Prima Coal is treated using a chemical lime (CaCO3) to comply with the Environmental Quality Standard. Chemical lime (CaCO3) that used in Azalea Pond from April 10th 2019 to May 9th 2019 is amounted to 248,400 kg. This research is aimed to evaluate the efficiency of lime usage (CaCO3) during that period. Quantitative method is used in this research. The usage of lime is analyzed with data that required such as: water sample, lime sample, inlet discharge, spillway discharge, pH inlet and outlet, topography data, and historical data of lime usage at Azalea Pond. Water and lime sample is taken using simple random sampling and cluster sampling method. Water release from Azalea Pond has comply with Environmental Standard Quality, but lime usage it’s not efficient. The result has displayed dosage optimum for pH 2 is 509,20 ppm, pH 3 is 353,10 ppm, pH 4 is 197 ppm. Comparation of lime efficiency at Azalea Pond has 42% or 100,780 Kg.
