Abstract

Research has been made on bioethanol from an empty palm fruit bunch regarding the optimization of the delignification process using ozone. The lignocellulose content found in EPFB is cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin respectively 47%, 22%, and 18%. The first process is delignification using ozone with a variation of time 0 -100 minutes with no acid addition and acid addition using HCl. After the delignification process, lignocellulose levels were analyzed by the Chesson method and the optimum time was obtained at 80 minutes under acid addition conditions, resulting in 61% cellulose, 18% hemicellulose and 1.5% lignin. Characterization using SEM was carried out to see the EPFB structure microscopically before and after delignification. Reducing sugar levels produced from the hydrolysis process using sulfuric acid concentration of 3% were tested using the Luff Schoorl method, resulting in delignificaton EPFB hydrolysates at 0.392 mg/mL and EPFB hydrolysates without delignification at 0.082 mg/mL. Bioethanol production is carried out through a fermentation process using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763 with delignification and without delignification EPFB substrate hydrolysates. Ethanol content produced was analyzed using HPLC. Based on chromatogram data analysis, ethanol produced from EPFB hydrolyzate substrate resulted in delignification of 0.024%, and without delignification of 0.015%.
