Abstract
Research on degradation of methylene blue dyes with MnFe2O4 coated with PEG 4000 has been conducted. This study aims to synthesize MnFe2O4 using the coprecipitation method and characterize it using XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS and VSM. MnFe2O4 produced is used to degrade methylene blue dyes with variable concentration of dyes, H2O2 volume, contact time and addition of salt types. The results from XRD characterization showed that the MnFe2O4 crystal size was 10.57 nm. The FTIR results show the existence of Mn-O wave number 586.36 cm-1 and the Fe-O function groups appear in wave number 462.92 cm-1. SEM-EDS results show that MnFe2O4 morphology is homongent. MnFe2O4 has a magnetization value of 23.5 emu/g. The degradation process of methylene blue dyes at a concentration of 20 mg/L, H2O2 volume of 0,2 mL, contact time of UV light at 30 minutes, the type of salt in NaHCO3 produced decreased effectiveness of 97.31%. The degradation analysis used TLC method which produced an Rf value of 0.62 cm for UV irradiation which identified the presence of other compounds, the eluent used in N-hexane and ethyl acetate in a ratio of 6:4.
