Abstract

This thesis reports the results of studies through laboratory research on the breakdown stress characteristics of Silicone Rubber (SiR) type polymeric insulating materials which are given alumina fillers. The provision of alumina fillers aims to increase the strength of SiR type insulation material against voltage stress. The concentration of filler in the form of alumina (Al2O3) added to SiR is 1%; 3%; and 5% of the total weight of the entire sample. Tests are carried out through measurement of PD Inception Voltage (PDIV) which is continued until the occurrence of breakdown voltage (VBD). The distance between the electrode tip and the sample surface is made in 2 variations of 0.5 mm and 1 mm. Test samples in the form of SiR insulation sheets with a thickness of 1 mm, made with a size of 50 x 50 mm. Testing is done using a needle-plate electrode system using alternating high voltage. The test results show that the increase in the concentration of filler material given affects the voltage values of PDIV and VBD. It is possible for treeing phenomena to occur in the insulating material which functions to inhibit the rate of electrons by making the electron trajectory become longer due to the presence of microns in the size of alumina so that the voltage for breakdown is greater. A significant increase in voltage value per concentration occurred at 3% filler concentration for an air gap of 1 mm, with PDIV values of 3.816 kV and VBD of 6.874 kV. These two conditions indicate that the increase in PDIV value will be proportional to the VBD value produced.
