Abstract

Studies to study the breakdown characteristics of polymeric silicone rubber (SiR) isolation given alumina fillers (Al2O3) and plasma exposure were carried out. Tests are carried out using samples in the form of silicone rubber sheets with a thickness of 1mm which are made in sizes 50mm x 50mm. Fillers in the form of alumina powder are mixed into SiR liquid with four composition variations, namely 1%, 3%, and 5%. The administration of plasma treatment on samples was carried out using a plasma sprayer, with variations in the length of treatment time of 30, 60, 120, and 180 seconds. Translucent strength testing uses needle electrodes that are given a high voltage alternating current (HVAC). The test results show that the addition of alumina as a filler in the sample has increased the ability of silicone rubber to withstand electrical stress . After the sample given the filler was given plasma treatment, the test results also showed an increase in the ability to withstand electrical stress on the silcone rubber. This shows that the administration of fillers and the provision of plasma exposure has increased the strength of SiR isolation in resisting electrical stress. This phenomenon is possible because Al2O3 added to SiR has increased the extension of time for discharge through a treeing mechanism, where alumina powder grains become a barrier to the occurrence of perfect sample penetration. Likewise plasma exposure has changed the structure and arrangement of atoms on the surface of the sample. The increase in optimal penetrating strength occurred in the sample given Al2O3 as much as 3% with an increase of 6.65%. The effect of plasma exposure was significant for samples given 30 seconds of exposure.
