Abstract

Microalga is a group of small-sized plants in the form of single cells or colonies that live in all areas of freshwater and marine waters and used as bioremediator and environmental change indicators. In the development of fish cultivation in swamp lands often find problems of contamination of organic waste materials. This study aimed to isolate swamp microalgae that can act as bioremediator of water contaminated with organic matter. This research was conducted from November 2016 to Maret 2017 at Microbiology Laboratory, Program Study of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Fishery Basic Laboratory and Aquaculture Laboratory, Program Study of Aquaculture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya. Methods of this research were starting from sampling, microalgae isolation, purification and culturing of microalgae isolates, and isolate ability test to improve the quality of swamp water contaminated with organic matter. Water samples for microalgae isolation were carried out in the swamp waters of Lebak Lebung Karangan Kabupaten Ogan Ilir, South Sumatera and polluted water samples of organic matter from Kelompok Usaha Tani Waring Jaya di Jalan Sei Hitam, Gang Angkatan 66. IV, RT.34, No.45, Kelurahan Bukit Lama, Kecamatan Ilir Barat 1 Palembang. Data analysis in the form of microalgae cell growth, maximum cell density of microalgae, specific microalgae growth rate, and water quality data including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, total organic carbon (TOC), and total phospate obtained were analyzed quantitatively descriptive. The results showed a swamp microalgae, Chlorella obtained from the water of swamps and ponds can reduce the value of EC, TDS, COD, TOC, and total nitrogen. Chlorella can grow in an environment of contaminated water organic matter, so it can be used as a potential organism for bioremediation of water contaminated with organic matter.
