Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the effect of adhesive type and particle size on the physical and mechanical properties of oil palm stem particle board. The research was conducted at Agricultural Technology Department Workshop, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and Material Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Sriwijaya University from January 2019 to June 2019. This research used a Factorial Randomized Block Design with two factors and three level. The first factor was particle size with three level were 10 mesh, 20 mesh and mixture. The second factor was adhesive types with two level, namely the type of urea formaldehyde adhesive and polyester resin. Parameters observed were water content, density, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE). The results showed that the particle size of oil palm stem powder had significant effect on the value of water content, density, modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE). The adhesive types had significant effect on water content, modulus of rupture (MOR) and density. The interaction between particle size and adhesive type had significant effect on water content and density. The treatment with particle size of 20 mesh and using urea formaldehyde adhesives (A2B1) was found be best treatment with water content of 10.08%, density of 0.28 g / cm3, modulus of rature (MOR) 11.66 kgf / cm2 and modulus of elasticity (MOE) 1,753.02 kgf / cm2.
