Abstract

Organophosphate group pesticides inhibit cholinesterase enzyme activity in the body. Workers in charge of spraying pesticides have a very high risk of being negatively affected by pesticide exposure. This study aims to determine the risk factors for decreasing levels of spray cholinesterase enzymes in oil palm plantations of company X, Musi Banyuasin Regency. This study used a quantitative approach using a cross sectional study design. Data collected by examining cholinesterase and by interviewing the respondents. The results showed that sprayers who had reduced cholinesterase enzyme levels were 4 people (3.5%). The statistical test results showed a statistically significant association between the use of PPE (p-value = 0.046) with a decrease in sprayer cholinesterase enzyme levels and no significant relationship between age, sex, level of knowledge, length of service, spraying direction, and frequency of spraying with reduced spray cholinesterase enzymes. The use of PPE is the factor most associated with a decrease in the levels of cholinesterase enzymes after being controlled by variable wind direction. It can be concluded that the use of PPE is closely related to the decrease in the level of the cholinesterase enzyme so that it is recommended to supplement the PPE used at work and there is a need for education given to sprayers regarding pesticide poisoning.
