Abstract
The research about preparation of alumina using hydrothermal method followed by calcination to convert Al(OH)3 to Al2O3 had been done. Calcination was carried out with variations in temperature of 600°C, 700°C, 800°C and 900°C. The best calcined alumina is used as an adsorbent for methyl orange dyes. The calcined alumina temperature of 900°C produces a sludge (% yield) of 66.53% of the 100% aluminum hydroxide produced where 33.47% lost is water that has evaporated when calcined. Characterization of alumina was carried out using XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX and BET. Characterization of XRD shows the crystallinity of calcined alumina similar to one another and calcined alumina at 900°C has the highest intensity and sharpest. Characterization of FTIR showed that alumina has an Al-O group. Characterization of SEM-EDX shows a rough, porous and non-homogeneous surface with Al and O constituent elements. Characterization of BET shows alumina has surface area, pore volume and pore diameter each of 85.1834 m2/g, 0.000587 cm2/g and 12.96961 nm. The results of XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX and BET characterization showed that alumina preparation was successful. Alumina has a pH PZC of 7. The optimum conditions for adsorption of methyl orange dyes by alumina are calcined at 900°C, at 20 minutes of contact time and 0.06 grams of alumina weight. In this study, standard alumina (merck) was used as a comparison. The alumina adsorption isotherm of methyl orange dyes follows the Freundlich equation with a regression value of R2 = 0.9885, n = 0.5220 and KF = 6.3655. The adsorption ability test was carried out where the standard alumina had the largest % adsorption which was 87.062% while the calcined alumina and aluminum sulfate each had %adsorption of 72.799% and -57,938%.
