Abstract

Background: There are several factors that can affect the maximum mouth opening such as height and weight. Height and weight are antrophometric indicators used to measured body mass index (BMI). The aim of the present study was to compare the maximum mouth opening between each category of body mass index (BMI). Method: A number of 80 students (40 male and 40 female) of Universitas Sriwijaya, age ≥ 18 years were participated. Subjects divided into group I (underweight), group II (normal weight), group III (overweight), and group IV (obese) based on BMI Asia Pasific. Each subject was instructed to seated in an upright position and looked straight ahead, then open the mouth as wide as possible. The measurement maximum mouth opening used digital caliper, the largest distance between the edges of the upper and lower incisors at midline was calculated. This procedure was repeated for three times within 1 minutes, the higest value was recorded. Data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey HSD analysis. Result: The highest maximum mouth opening score was overweight group (51,87 mm), and the lowest score was underweight group (40,26 mm). There was a significant difference in maximum mouth opening between I and II, I and III, I and IV, II and III, III and IV group. Conclusion: Overweight group presented the highest maximum mouth opening compared with another BMI group.
