Abstract

The study of manufacture nickel phosphate pillared bentonite catalyst had successfully carried out with variations in the concentration of nickel phosphate are 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 meq. The characterization of nickel phosphate pillared bentonite using acidity analysis, XRD, FT-IR spectrophotometer, SEM-EDS and GSA analysis. The acidity value of Na-Bentonite increase to 5.587 mmol/g after being pillared using NiHPO4. The XRD characterization showed that there was a shift of angle 2θ from 6.75º to 6.94˚. The FTIR spectra of Bentonite-NiHPO4 showed that by the appearance of a wide peak 3183 cm-1 as the -HPO4 group. The morphology and composition of the elements based from SEM-EDS data show an increase in Ni atoms of 4.96% and P atoms of 5.19%. The results of the GSA analysis showed an increase in pore surface area to 100,086 m2/g, pore volume to 0.1693 cm3/g and pore diameter to 67.66 Å after pillared using NiHPO4. The performance Bentonite-NiHPO4 catalysts was shown in converting ethanol to diethyl ether and the conversion results measured by using GC-MS. The diethyl ether product obtained at 6.84% when converted with Bentonite-NiHPO4 catalyst concentration of 6 meq.
