Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhoea is such severe pain that is felt during menstruation and usually affect teens in their 20s. The most common cause of primary dysmenorrhea is due to the high prostaglandin which can be caused by several factors, one of which is the result of nicotine contained in exposure to cigarette smoke. The purpose of this study was to analyze whether there was a correlation between exposure to cigarette smoke and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in female students at Sriwijaya University. This study used a cross sectional design. A total of 101 female students of Sriwijaya University were selected based on the proporation sampling technique. Bivariate analysis showed that there was a correlation between exposure to cigarette smoke (p-value = 0.002), family history (p-value = 0.011), and fast food consumption (p-value = 0.020) with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhoea in female students Sriwijaya University. Whereas there was no correlation between menarche age (p-value = 0.374), and menstrual period (p-value = 0.673) with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in female students of Sriwijaya University. It can be concluded that the variables of exposure to cigarette smoke, family growth, and consuming fast food are related to primary dysmenorrhoea. Students are expected to avoid cigarette smoke by using masks and keep a distance from the smoker if they are around you, and reduce consumption of fast food (fast food) and apply a healthy lifestyle such as eating - nutritious food.
