Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda is a new pest that attacks corn plants. S. frugiperda is very detrimental because it attacks right at the growing point of corn plants which can cause corn plants to be damaged or even die. Entomopathogenic fungi are one type of pathogen that can infect insects. Entomopathogenic fungi have been widely used for pest control. Therefore this study aimed to identify entomopathogenic fungi obtained from the horticultural rhizosphere in South Sumatra Province morphologically and to measure the pathogenicity value of entomopathogenic fungi on S. frugiperda larvae. This research has been carried out at the Entomology Laboratory, Department of Pests and Plant Diseases. Plant Protection Study Program. Faculty of Agriculture. Universitas Sriwijaya from August 2019 to March 2020. This experiment used exploration methods (insect bait method) and survey methods in several regency or city in South Sumatera Province wich are Ogan Komering Ilir, Ogan Ilir, Prabumulih, Muara Enim, Lahat, Pagaralam, and Banyuasin. Then, the pathogenicity test used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) using 15 treatments (control and isolates) that were repeated three times and observed for 12 days. The results obtained 14 isolates of Metarhizium sp. from Muara Enim, Ogan Ilir, Pagar Alam, Prabumulih, Ogan Komering Ilir, Lahat. Macroscopically isolates of Metarhizium sp. has the characteristics of a colony on days 1 to 5 that is grow spread like white flour. Then, on the 6th to 10th day, it turns solid green. Microscopically the isolate of Metarhizium sp. have septate hyphae with conidia attached to the tip of the hyphae. Conidia are oval or cylindrical but are not insulated with an average size of 8.87 µm. The highest mortality was found in PirOI isolates reaching 78.67% and LT50 and LT95 were shortest at 6.43 days and 14.31 days. Then, the lowest imago appeared was found in isolates of TeSkME, CasPsPGA, and CaTtME reaching only 18.7%. Symptoms arising after application on days 1 to 3, there are several S. frugiperda infected with fungi that are characterized by stiff death and hyphae growth on all surfaces of green-colored larvae. Then, the peak mortality occurred from days 4 to 12. However, on the 10th day most of S. frugiperda larvae in the treatment entered the pupa phase and some larvae failed to form pupae (dead). The conclusions of this study are 1). 14 isolates of Metarhizium sp. 2). Isolate Metarhizium sp. the most virulent in controlling S. frugiperda larvae were PirOI isolates with 78.67% mortality and the shortest LT50 and LT95 is 6.43 days and 14.31 days.
