Abstract

This study aims to describe the types and uses of deixis in Edensor's novel by Andrea Hirata. The method in this study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data source in this study is the Edensor novel by Andrea Hirata. Data collection uses document techniques that are identifying words or sentences, taking notes, and marking or underlining. Data analysis techniques performed, identifying words or sentences containing deixis, clarifying, analyzing then interpreting the data, and concluding. Based on the analysis there are 69 data contained in the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata, namely: (1) 35 first person deixis data which is divided into three parts, first person deixis singular (me and me) and plural (us and us), person deixis both singular (you) and plural (you), third person deixis singular (he) and plural (they) and plural (them), (2) 12 deixis data places (here, situ, and there), (3) 16 time deixis data (now, later, earlier, and first), (4) 3 data on discourse deixis (that) and (5) 3 data on social deixis (hajj, teachers, and lecturers).
