Abstract

Literacy culture in Indonesia is still weak. It can be seen from Indonesian reading interest index, it was only 0.001% which means in every 1000 people, there’s only 1 person has reading insterest. In line with that problem, the city of Palembang also has a low level of reading interest. Palembang's reading interest level is 15th out of 32 provinces in Indonesia. To overcome this literacy problem, the government launched a program called the “Gerakan Literasi Nasional” (GLN). To support that government program, it needs a space that can become a center for the community to get literacy education and develop their literacy. That’s realized by Palembang Literacy Centers. The design approach adopted is Biophilic Design. This approach makes the building blends with the surrounding environtment, so it creates a calm and natural atmosphere to support the literacy activities. Through the Palembang Literacy Center, it’s hoped that it can accommodate all literacy activities and also make Palembang City as a pioneer of the growth of literacy culture in Indonesia.
