Abstract

Apartment is a vertical housing to resolve the land’s limitations due to the increased population in large cities such as Palembang. Apartments intended for middle class people are supported by high interest in buying dwellings in downtown’s strategic location. Live in vertical housing without stepping on the ground makes residents unable to have gardens at home. To overcome this problem, an Urban Farming apartment concept was designed which implemented a modern farming system on limited land. The Urban Farming’s apartment is one of solution to create a better quality in apartments that are connected with parks and gardens for each unit. Apartments with communal areas accommodate common activities, such as planting areas, which will strengthen social bonds between residents. In response to the long site shape, the mass is divided into three apartments with a separated parking building. In the middle of the site there’s plaza that flows air and light to all building’s sides which also facilitates farming activities as well as socializing. This also applies to the corridor of each apartments’ floor. Architectural design and utility are also adapted the Urban Farming’s concept. The building is shrouded in material which mimic the growing and also functions as a second skin. The second skins are made of wood panels combined with a flow pipe which also functions as a watering utility for verticulture plants. The farming system in plaza applies Aquaponics system that utilizes fish excretion to be converted into nutrients for plants. The nutritious flow flowed through pipes from fish ponds to the planting media which are both both located in the plaza.
