Abstract

In the city of Palembang there are many science enthusiasts. This can be seen from the number of participants of Science Olympic in Palembang each year. This shows the potential that exists in Palembang to further develop the field of science. However, there are no adequate facilities to make it happen. Therefore, Palembang Science Exhibition Center and Planetarium is the solution to this problem. The Palembang Science Exhibition Center and Planetarium is a place that presents knowledge through a variety of hand-on exhibits with the planetarium being the main attraction. This final project aims at creating buildings that can accommodate a variety of modern and high-tech hand-on exhibits, boasting planetarium, and creating iconic buildings. The function of this building is to introduce science to people who do not yet know science, as well as being a mean of deepening science for enthusiasts. This building consists of 2 masses, namely the main mass with a science introduction function, as well as a supporting mass with a science deepening and manager function. The main mass consisted of exhibition, planetariums and live-show theater. While the supporting mass consists of training, laboratories, libraries, seminar rooms, and management offices. To create an attractive atmosphere, futuristic architecture was applied to this project. Futuristic means towards the future, so that futuristic buildings do not match the relationship with the past, but try to represent the future. This futuristic architecture is applied because science is related to the future, which one can be used to create innovations in the future. This theme can also realize iconic buildings. The futuristic architectural characteristic that is applied to buildings is nihilism, which is clean design, with the use of wide glass. Other characteristics are the dominant shape of the arch, the use of slick and shiny textured materials, the use of architectural lighting, and the use of furniture with aerodynamic designs. The material used in buildings is Glassfiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) for the roof and walls, spider glass, and aluminum corrugated sheets as sun-shading.
