Abstract

Anemia is an indicator of both poor nutrition and poor health. The most common anemia caused by malnutrition is iron deficiency anemia.. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the risk factors and the incidence of anemia in elementary-school children living in malaria-endemic regions. This study was analytical-observational applying a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted on 133 elementary-school children aged 9 – 12 years old coming from five subdistricts in Seluma regency. These respondents were collected using multi stage random sampling technique. The Stool of responden and blood tests were performed to identify helminthiasis and malaria infections, examination of hemoglobin levels to determine anemia status.Determination of nutritional status based on short and normal categories, as measured by calculating the z-score index (TB / U). Data were then analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. The results of measurement of hemoglobin levels found 22.6% of children have anemia. Malaria examination results were not found by respondents who were positive for malaria (0%), faecal examination found positive for helminthiasis 37.6%. Chi square analysis showed that helminthiasis (p = 0.014); OR = 2.72, nutritional status (p = 0.037); OR = 2.41, breakfast habits (p = 0.001); OR = 4.34, parental income ( p = 0.013); OR = 0.35, has a significant relationship to the incidence of anemia, but a history of malaria (p = 0.391); OR = 1.50, maternal education (p = 0.211); OR = 0.58, In the logistic regression equation model the independent variable can explain the probability of anemia occurrence of 78.4%. The most dominant factor is breakfast habits with an OR value of 4.427. Children who don't have breakfast have 4,427 times the risk of anemia compared to children who have breakfast Keywords: Anemia; Risk factors, Elementary School children, malaria endemic area
